What is Leitner System?

The Leitner system is a widely used method for efficiently learning and retaining information, especially in the context of flashcards. It was developed by the German psychologist Sebastian Leitner in the 1970s.

Box Organization:

  • Box 1: New cards
  • Box 2: Cards answered correctly go here
  • Box 3: Cards answered correctly in Box 2 move here
  • Box 4: Cards answered correctly in Box 3 move here
  • ...

Study Session:

  • Start by going through the cards in Box 1.
  • If you answer a card correctly, move it to the next box.
  • If you answer a card incorrectly, move it back to Box 1.

Review Schedule:

  • Cards progress through the boxes based on your performance.
  • The more you know a card, the less frequently you need to review it.
  • Cards move forward when answered correctly and move back to Box 1 when answered incorrectly.

Gradual Review:

  • Over time, you'll find that cards you know well will move into higher-numbered boxes and be reviewed less frequently.
  • Cards you struggle with will stay in lower-numbered boxes and be reviewed more often.

By using this system, you can focus your attention on the material that you find challenging while gradually spending less time on the material you have mastered. It's a self-paced and adaptive method that helps optimize the review process for efficient learning and long-term retention.

Here in Just Flashcards you are given 12 boxes and you are in full control of how you should use them. For example, you could review all cards in box 1 every day, cards in box 2 every other day, etc.
